God, be with us now. You come to us in many ways. We are amazed by the care you lavish
on us.
Keep us mindful. Touch our hearts. Direct our feet. Meet us on our journey. Amen.
At Epiphany, we have instituted a Discipleship Program that encourages us to strengthen our faith through
regular prayer, worship, Bible study, and our spiritual relationships with each other. By deepening our
understanding of God in our lives, we will find both the passion and direction to be His disciples in the world
around us.
Worship
Worship Schedule
We have our Sunday service at 9:30 am. Special services are held for Epiphany (January 6th), Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day and mid-week devotions are offered during other times of the year.
What to Expect at Church
The congregation gathers to share the Word and Sacrament, enabled by the Holy Spirit for service in God's world. Communion is part of every major service at Epiphany and all baptized Christians are invited to join us in the Sacrament. Both wine and grape juice are provided in individual cups and Common Cups. We are delighted to welcome guests to our Lord's House and to His Meal.
Worship is conducted in a reverent, yet informal, manner. Children are embraced and challenged to grow spiritually through the Pastor's "Time with Children". A nursery is also provided for children up through Kindergarten from 8:00 to 12:30 each Sunday, if you would prefer to take advantage of it.
Learning
Sunday School
Epiphany holds Sunday School classes for all ages, from 3 years to adult, each Sunday at 9:45 am. The school year runs from September to June. Other Sunday School activities include the September Rally Day, Sanctuary Sundays, the Christmas Pagent, an Easter Egg Hunt, and the Welcome Summer Picnic.
First Communion Classes
Theological thinking regarding receiving Communion has changed in recent years. The Sacrament is now being offered to younger persons with the decision for the age and maturity left to parents in consultation with pastors. Children and their parents are invited to participate in conversations with the pastor regarding the meaning of Holy Communion. This process uses the ELCA policy statement on "The Use of the Means of Grace" to guide its discussion.
Confirmation Classes
As is our custom, youth in grades 7 and up are encouraged to begin Confirmation training. Epiphany uses the Faith Inkubators program that provides a lively, innovative format for learning about the Lutheran faith and how that applies to daily living. Grounded in the worship of God as our primary response to His love, the class also offers opportunities for service in the community of faith and throughout the greater community. Retreats, field trips, youth group activities and other fellowship events build Christian friendships within the group.
Discussion Group
From 7:00—9:00 pm Thursday nights, Pastor Ray leads an open forum on various topics of interest, often proposed by those attending.
Book Club
Through out the year, a small group gathers once a month to discuss books of faith. Book are picked by the group and vary greatly in their style and content. Past books have included Memoirs: All Rivers Run to the Sea by Elie Wiesel, Miracles by CS Lewis, and The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. We generally meet on the first Monday of each month.
Youth Group
Our Youth Group is open to middle- and high-school youth. This group meets twice a month on SUnday evenings to plan events and just have fun together. Activities include participation in Shekinah & Chrysalis retreats, Walk for the Homeless, 30-Hour Famine, the nationwide Youth Gathering, Chi-Rho... and so much more.
Fellowship
Opportunities to get together for the fun of it abound with events like the Annual Chili Cookoff, the Youth Talent Show, Bethlehem Marketplace, Rally Day Picnic, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, and Potomac Nationals baseball games. Epiphany also participates in the Christian Fellowship Softball league, fielding a co-ed team with players from Epiphany and Christus Victor.
